John Sebastian Little

John Sebastian "Bass" Little (born March 14, 1851 in Sebastian County , Arkansas , †  October 29, 1916 in Little Rock , Arkansas) was an American politician and 1907 governor of Arkansas. He also represented this state between 1894 and 1907 in the US House of Representatives .

Early years and political advancement

John Little attended local schools in his home country and Cane Hill College in Washington County . After that he was a teacher himself for a short time. After completing a law degree, he was admitted to the bar in 1874, whereupon he opened a law firm in Greenwood .

Between 1878 and 1882, Little was a district attorney in Arkansas' Twelfth Judicial District. In 1884 he was elected to the Arkansas House of Representatives and served on the Twelfth District Court between 1886 and 1890. In 1894 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC to succeed the resigned Clifton R. Breckinridge . After several re-elections, he remained there until January 1907.

Governor's term and end of life

In 1906 Little was elected as the Democratic Party candidate for the new governor of Arkansas. He took office on January 18, 1907. Shortly afterwards he suffered a nervous breakdown. After that it was no longer possible for him to exercise his office. On February 11, 1907, he went on a long vacation to the Texas Gulf Coast. Acting Senate President John Isaac Moore served as governor until May 14, 1907. That day Xenophon Overton Pindall became the new Senate President, with the task of completing Little's remaining term. John Little did not recover from his nervous ailment. He died in November 1916 in a mental hospital in Little Rock. He was married to Elizabeth J. Irwin, with whom he had five children.
