John Paul Hammerschmidt (born May 4, 1922 in Harrison , Arkansas , † April 1, 2015 in Springdale , Arkansas) was an American politician .

Hammerschmidt attended a military college in South Carolina from 1938 to 1939 and the University of Arkansas from 1940 to 1941 . From 1942 he took part in the Second World War as an Air Force transport pilot in Southeast Asia . From 1945 to 1946 he attended Oklahoma State University - Stillwater and earned a Bachelor of Science degree. He got into the lumber business, founded the Hammerschmidt Lumber Company and also headed the Construction Products Company . He became president of the Arkansas Lumber Dealers Association and the Southwestern Lumberman's Association .

In 1966 Hammerschmidt won a seat in the House of Representatives for the Republican Party in the third constituency of Arkansas . He defeated the Democratic incumbent James William Trimble and was the first Republican since the era of Reconstruction to move into the House of Representatives for Arkansas. In 1974 Hammerschmidt was able to defend his seat of parliament against the future 42nd US President Bill Clinton with a lead of almost 6000 votes. In 1993 Hammerschmidt withdrew from the House of Representatives and political life. During his tenure, he was distinguished by his very conservative voting behavior with regard to foreign policy and socio-political issues. In economic policy, however, he took more moderate positions.
