Edward Cross
Edward Cross (born November 11, 1798 in Hawkins City , Hawkins County , Tennessee , † April 6, 1887 in Washington , Arkansas ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1839 and 1845 he represented the first constituency of the state of Arkansas in the US House of Representatives .
Career
After elementary school, Edward Cross studied law. After being admitted to the bar, he started working in his new profession. In 1826 he moved to the Arkansas Territory . There he was appointed federal judge for this area on May 26, 1830. Between 1836 and 1836 he headed the federal government's land surveying service in the Arkansas Territory.
Politically, Cross was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1838 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first district of the state of Arkansas, founded in 1836 . There he took over from Archibald Yell on March 4, 1839 . After two re-elections, Cross was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1845 . From 1843 to 1845 he was chairman of the committee that dealt with private land claims.
In 1844 Cross renounced another candidacy. Between 1845 and 1855 he was a judge on the Arkansas Supreme Court . He was then President of the Cairo & Fulton Railway Company until 1862. In 1874 he became Attorney General of Arkansas. Edward Cross spent his twilight years on his estate "Marlbrook" near Washington, Arkansas. He was buried there after his death in 1887.
