Asa Hodges (born January 22, 1822 in Moulton , Lawrence County , Alabama , † June 6, 1900 in Marion , Arkansas ) was an American politician . Between 1873 and 1875 he represented the first constituency of the state of Arkansas in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Asa Hodges was born in Alabama, but came to Arkansas very early. He graduated from LaGrange College and then studied law. After his admission in 1848, he began to work in this profession until 1860. Politically, he joined the Republican Party after the Civil War .

In 1867, Hodges was a delegate to a meeting to revise the Arkansas constitution. In 1868 he was elected to the Arkansas House of Representatives. Between 1870 and 1873 he was a member of the State Senate . In the congressional election of 1872, Hodges was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the first district of Arkansas , where he succeeded Democrat James M. Hanks on March 4, 1873 . Since he refused to run again in 1874, Hanks could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1875 .

After his time in Congress, Asa Hodges retired from politics. He worked in agriculture for the rest of his life. He died on June 6, 1900 in Marion and was in Memphis ( Tennessee buried).
