John Edwards

John Edwards (born October 24, 1805 in Louisville , Kentucky , † April 8, 1894 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1871 and 1872 he represented the third constituency of the state of Arkansas in the US House of Representatives .

Life

John Edwards initially received only an average school education and later studied law. He then moved to Indiana , where he was a member of the State House of Representatives between 1845 and 1846 . He lived in California between 1849 and 1852 before returning to Indiana and serving on the State Senate in 1853 . In 1855 he moved to Iowa and became a delegate to a meeting to revise the state's constitution. Between 1856 and 1860 he was also a member of the House of Representatives in Iowa . From 1858 he was president of this chamber. In 1857 he founded the newspaper "The Patriot".

Edwards served in the Union Army during the Civil War . There he made it to the position of brigadier general of a volunteer unit until 1864 . After the end of the war, Edwards settled in Fort Smith, Arkansas. In August 1866, President Andrew Johnson named him Assessor of Internal Revenue in his area. He held this office until 1869. Politically, he joined a faction of the Republican Party , which is Liberal Republican Party called. In 1870 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington as their candidate against the actual Republican candidate, incumbent Thomas Boles . There he took his seat on March 4, 1871. But Boles appealed against the election result. After this objection had been granted, Edwards had to give up his mandate on February 9, 1872. Thomas Boles then ended his term of office until March 3, 1873.

John Edwards did not seek any higher political office afterwards. He settled in the federal capital Washington, where he died in 1894. Edwards was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
