history

Greenwood was founded in 1851 and named after Judge Alfred Burton Greenwood when the site was selected for an administrative seat. First, a courthouse was built in log cabin style, which was replaced by a wooden frame building in 1865 and became the center of the village. It was later destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1916 south of the original location. The growth of Greenwood was comparatively slow at first, but the outbreak of the Civil War gave the place a certain importance as a trading center. After that, Greenwood endured many economic changes and setbacks. Probably the greatest test came when a devastating tornado swept through the community in April 1968, killing 13 people and destroying many businesses and homes. However, the place was resolutely rebuilt and is now growing thanks to its proximity to Fort Smith.

A nearly two meter high bronze statue ( Miner's Memorial ) of a miner, an authentic coal vehicle and two granite walls with the names of thousands of Sebastian County's miners were unveiled in October 2000 in honor of the many miners from the area.
