Fort Chaffee is a military base of the US Army . The base is in the state of Arkansas near the city of Fort Smith . Established in 1941 and named after Major General Adna R. Chaffee, Jr. , the base is used as a training facility for the United States National Guard and US Army reserve units . There are currently no active units stationed at Fort Chaffee.

history

Fort Chaffee was originally called Camp Chaffee and was built in 1941 in response to the increased need for troops for imminent participation in World War II . During the Second World War, the base also served as a prisoner of war camp for German prisoners of war . On March 21, 1956, Camp Chaffee was renamed Fort Chaffee. From 1975 to 1976 around 50,000 refugees before the Vietnam War and from 1980 to 1981 around 25,000 Cuban refugees were housed in Fort Chaffee. From 1987 to 1993, was part contending powerful cross- training and training center Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) located in Fort Chaffee. In 1995 the closure of the base was recommended and implemented on September 27, 1997. After the closure, the barriers and parts of the buildings were dismantled. After the attacks of September 11, 2001, the area was again used as a restricted military area and by rescue services. After Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, the empty barracks were used as emergency shelters for more than 10,000 refugees from Louisiana , Mississippi and Texas .
