Stephen Wallace Dorsey (born February 28, 1842 in Benson , Rutland County , Vermont , † March 20, 1916 in Los Angeles ) was an American politician ( Republican Party ) who represented the state of Arkansas in the US Senate .

At a young age, Stephen Dorsey and his family moved from Vermont to Ohio , where the small town of Oberlin became their new home. He attended public schools and joined the Union Army at the beginning of the Civil War . After the war he moved to Sandusky , where he found employment with a tool company, of which he later became president. He held the same post after moving to Arkansas with the Arkansas Railway Company .

Dorsey, who settled in Helena , was elected to the Senate in 1872 and was a member of the Chamber from March 4, 1873 to March 3, 1879; he did not apply for re-election. During his tenure in the Senate, he chaired the Committee for the District of Columbia . So far, he was the last Republican to serve as a senior senator , that is, the senior of the two Senate members from a single state.

In 1880 Dorsey was a member of the Republican National Committee ; otherwise he no longer took on any political tasks. He was involved in ranching and mining in New Mexico and Colorado , and spent the final years of his life in California .
