Rostrata column

As rostral column refers to a with real or symbolic Rammspornen from the bow of enemy ships decorated column of honor for special achievements of naval warfare or other nautical exploits. In some recent cases, they have mutated into street lamps .

Antiquity

The column of Gaius Duilius at the Roman Forum, which was rediscovered at the foot of the Capitol in 1565, together with an inscription, was exemplary . Modern examples based on ancient models can be found in St. Petersburg (with beacons), in Vladivostok , Bordeaux and at the Columbus Memorial, erected in 1892 for the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' voyage to America, at Columbus Circle in New York . Another monumental Columna rostrata is the honor column erected for Wilhelm von Tegetthoff , the victor of the Battle of Lissa , on the Vienna Praterstern ( Tegetthoff monument ). A smaller rust column dedicated to his commander-in-chief, Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian in 1876, was originally in Pula and was transferred after the First World War as a document of the defeat of Italy as a victory trophy to Venice on the edge of the Giardini pubblici .
