The Tegetthoff monument on the Praterstern in Vienna

The Tegetthoff monument in Vienna was designed by Carl Kundmann (statue) and Carl von Hasenauer (architecture) and commemorates Wilhelm von Tegetthoff , vice admiral and commander of the Austrian and Austro-Hungarian navies in the 1860s. It was unveiled on September 21, 1886, on the Praterstern at the end of Praterstrasse in the 2nd district of Vienna, Leopoldstadt , at one of the most important traffic junctions in the city of Vienna.

On a 5 m high plinth surrounded by fighting hippocamps (mythical creatures: horse in front, fish in the back) stands an approx. 11 m high marble column with an anchor and each side decorated with three bronze ship's beaks. The 3.5 m high, bronze statue of the admiral is attached to the column.

Planning for the memorial began in 1871, the year Tegetthoff died, but no agreement on the location was reached for a long time. In 1872 a competition was announced in which the Swiss sculptor Ferdinand Schlöth was awarded 1st prize. This draft met with resistance and was ultimately not implemented.

The location ultimately chosen guaranteed maximum pedestrian frequency thanks to the neighboring Nordbahnhof , then the most important train station in Vienna, and the nearby Wurstelprater , the city's large amusement park.

The monument was 20 years after Tegetthoff great success, winning the Battle of Lissa , in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph I. unveiled.

The monument was restored from 2016 to 2018, the budget for it was 897,000 euros.
