Francis Xavier Roque

Francis Xavier Roque (born October 9, 1928 in Providence , Rhode Island , † September 12, 2019 in Pawtucket , Rhode Island) was an American Roman Catholic clergyman and auxiliary bishop in the US military ordinariate .

Life

Francis Xavier Roque received his theological training at the Our Lady of Providence seminary in Warwick , Rhode Island, and at St. John's seminary , Brighton , Massachusetts . He was ordained priestly for the Diocese of Providence on September 19, 1953 by Bishop Russell Joseph McVinney in the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Providence, Rhode Island.

From 1961 to 1983 he was chaplain in the United States Army for 22 years . His military service as a chaplain began at Fort Gordon and with the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell . He served in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in Korea from 1965 to 1966 with the 2nd Infantry Division . In 1968 he was transferred to Pleiku , capital of the Gia Lai province in the central highlands of Vietnam , and later transferred to the 4th Infantry Division. During this time he worked as an assistant in the Chaplain USA division until 1969.

Roque graduated from the US Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth , Kansas , a higher education institution of the US Armed Forces in 1972 , for the training of military leadership. From 1972 to 1975 he was assigned to the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command . From 1976 to 1978 he was stationed in Germany as a brigade chaplain for the 3rd Infantry Division and as a division chaplain for the 8th Infantry Division . He returned to the United States at Fort Hood , Texas, and was Assistant to the Chaplain Corps from 1978 to 1980. From 1980 to 1983 he was in Carlisle Barracks , Pennsylvania.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on March 29, 1983 auxiliary bishop in the US military ordinariate and titular bishop of Bagai . The Archbishop of New York and then military vicar, Terence James Cardinal Cooke , donated the bishop to him on May 10 of the same year in St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York ; Co- consecrators were Louis Edward Gelineau , Bishop of Providence, and John Joseph Thomas Ryan , Archbishop of the United States Military Ordinary. His motto was "Queen of Peace".

Francis Xavier Roque was episcopal vicar for veterans affairs in the military ordinariate, especially in the hospital pastoral care of 172 military hospitals, rehabilitation and home institutions.

On September 15, 2004, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.
