John Joseph Thomas Ryan (born November 1, 1913 in Albany (New York) , New York , † October 9, 2000 ) was military archbishop of the United States .

Life

John Joseph Thomas Ryan was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Albany on June 16, 1951 .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on February 7, 1966 first Archbishop of Anchorage . The Archbishop of New York , Francis Cardinal Spellman , donated him episcopal ordination on March 25 of the same year ; the inauguration followed on April 14th. Co-consecrators were the auxiliary bishops Edward Joseph Maginn from Albany and Edward Ernest Swanstrom from New York.

On November 4, 1975 he was named coadjutor of the US military bishop and titular archbishop pro hac vice of Gabii and was introduced to office on December 13 of the same year. On March 16, 1985, he succeeded the late Military Archbishop Terence Cardinal Cooke and was inducted into office on March 25 of the same year.

Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation on May 14, 1991.
