Francis Thomas Hurley
Francis Thomas Hurley (born January 12, 1927 in San Francisco , California , † January 10, 2016 in Anchorage , Alaska ) was Archbishop of Anchorage .
Life
Francis Thomas Hurley, son of an Irish immigrant family and one of the brothers of Mark Joseph Hurley , studied philosophy and theology at the diocesan seminary of the Archdiocese of San Francisco and was ordained a priest on June 16, 1951 . He served as a chaplain in San Francisco.
Pope Paul VI appointed him on February 4, 1970 auxiliary bishop in Juneau and titular bishop of Daimlaig . His brother and Bishop of Santa Rosa, California , Mark Joseph Hurley , donated him episcopal ordination on March 19, 1970 ; Co-consecrators were William Edward McManus , auxiliary bishop in Chicago , and Joseph Louis Bernardin , auxiliary bishop in Atlanta .
He was named Bishop of Juneau on July 20, 1971, and installed in office on September 8, 1971. On May 4, 1976 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. appointed Archbishop of Anchorage and inducted into office on July 8, 1976. In 1981 he was able to welcome Pope John Paul II as a guest in Anchorage.
On March 3, 2001, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation for health reasons. Hurley continued to live in Anchorage, where he died two days before his 89th birthday in January 2016.
