Roger Lawrence Schwietz OMI (born July 3, 1940 in Saint Paul , Minnesota ) is retired Archbishop of Anchorage , Alaska .

Life

Schwietz which entered Congregation of the Oblates in and received on 20 December 1967, the priestly ordination .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Duluth on December 12, 1989 . As a motto he chose Jesus Christ is Lord . He was ordained episcopal by the Archbishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis , John Robert Roach , on February 2 of the next year; Co- consecrators were Robert Henry Brom , Coadjutor Bishop of San Diego , and Michael David Pfeifer OMI, Bishop of San Angelo .

He was named coadjutor archbishop of Anchorage on January 18, 2000, and was appointed to the office on March 24 of the same year. After Francis Thomas Hurley's resignation , he succeeded him on March 3, 2001 as Archbishop of Anchorage. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on January 16, 2008 as Apostolic Administrator of Juneau . He held this office until the end of the Sedis vacancy on January 19, 2009. From September 2013 to December 2014, he was also Apostolic Administrator of the vacant Diocese of Fairbanks .

On October 4, 2016, Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation.
