The Roman Catholic Diocese of Fairbanks ( lat. : Dioecesis de Fairbanks ) is in the United States located Roman Catholic diocese based in Fairbanks , Alaska .
history
The Diocese of Fairbanks was on July 27, 1894 by Pope Leo XIII. established from cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of Victoria and the Diocese of New Westminster as the Apostolic Prefecture of Alaska . On December 22, 1916, the Apostolic Prefecture of Alaska was elevated to the Apostolic Vicariate . The Vicariate Apostolic Alaska gave on June 23, 1951 parts of its territory to establish the Diocese of Juneau .
On August 8, 1962, the Vicariate Apostolic Alaska was raised to the diocese and renamed the Diocese of Fairbanks . In addition, the Diocese of Fairbanks was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Seattle as a suffragan . On January 22, 1966, the Diocese of Fairbanks was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Anchorage as a suffragan. The Diocese of Fairbanks was still subject to the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples . With a decision of November 11, 2019, Pope Francis revoked the competence of the congregation and made the diocese subject to general canon law .
