Francis Doyle Gleeson

Francis Doyle Gleeson SJ (born January 17, 1895 in Carrollton , Missouri , † April 30, 1983 ) was an American Roman Catholic clergyman and Bishop of Fairbanks .

Life

Francis Doyle Gleeson joined the Jesuit order in and received on 29 July 1926, the sacrament of Holy Orders .

Pope Pius XII appointed him on January 8, 1948 Vicar Apostolic of Alaska and Titular Bishop of Cotenna . The Archbishop of Portland, Oregon , Edward Daniel Howard , donated him episcopal ordination on April 5 of that year ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Spokane , Charles Daniel White , and the Bishop of Nelson , Martin Michael Johnson .

With the elevation of the Vicariate Apostolic Alaska to the rank of diocese and renaming, Gleeson became the first Bishop of Fairbanks on August 8, 1962 .

Francis Doyle Gleeson attended all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council as the Council Father.

On November 15, 1968, Pope Paul VI. resigned as Bishop of Fairbanks and appointed him titular Bishop of Cuicul . Gleeson renounced the titular seat with effect from January 15, 1971.
