Edward Daniel Howard

Edward Daniel Howard (born November 5, 1877 in Cresco , Iowa , † January 2, 1983 in Beaverton , Oregon ) was an American Roman Catholic clergyman. Howard was Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Portland, Oregon , from 1926 to 1966 .

Life

Edward Howard, the son of John Howard, an Irish immigrant and his wife Mary, grew up on a farm in Howard County , northeastern Iowa. He graduated from Loras College in Dubuque , later St. Mary's College in Kansas and the Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity in Minnesota .

On June 12, 1906, Howard was ordained a priest by Archbishop John Ireland . He then returned to St. Joseph College in Dubuque, where he taught Greek and Latin as a professor at the local high school . In 1908 he became director of the high school and in 1916 dean of the entire faculty. From 1921 to 1924 he served as Chancellor .

Pope Pius XI appointed Howard on December 23, 1923 auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Davenport and titular bishop of Isaura . He was ordained bishop on April 8, 1924 by Austin Dowling , Archbishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis . Co-consecrators were Bishops Daniel Mary Gorman of Boise City and Thomas William Drumm of Des Moines .

After the death of the Archbishop of Oregon City Alexander Christie on April 6, 1925, Howard succeeded him on April 30, 1926 in office. Howard was officially inaugurated on August 26, 1926 at St. Mary's Cathedral in Portland . On September 26, 1928, the name of the diocese was changed to the Archdiocese of Portland, Oregon .

Edward Howard presided over his diocese as bishop for a total of 40 years. During this time he campaigned for religious orders such as the Vincentian Community and had the Catholic Sentinel , a private journal published on the west coast, come back into the supervision of the church. In 1939 he founded the Central Catholic High School in Portland. In the same year he was received by Pope Pius XII. honored with the title of Papal Assistant to the Throne . In 1935 he held a synod for the priests in his diocese; He also took part in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 .

On December 9, 1966, Pope Paul VI took the resignation of the now 89-year-old archbishop. At the same time he appointed him titular bishop of Albulae , which Howard presided over only pro hac vice . Howard then retired to a retirement home in Beaverton.

Edward Daniel Howard died here in early January 1983 at the age of 105. At his death he was the oldest living prelate in the world.
