Joseph Crimont

Joseph Raphael John Crimont SJ (born February 2, 1858 in Ferrières , France , † May 20, 1945 in Juneau ) was a French-American Roman Catholic clergyman and Vicar Apostolic of Alaska .

Life

Joseph Crimont received on 26 August 1888 sacrament of Holy Orders . Then joined the Jesuit order and took the religious vows on February 2, 1894 .

Pope Pius X appointed him on March 28, 1904 Apostolic Prefect of Alaska. After the prefecture was elevated to the Apostolic Vicariate in December 1916 , Pope Benedict XV appointed Crimont on February 15, 1917 as Vicar Apostolic of Alaska and on March 22 of the same year as Titular Bishop of Ammaedara . The Archbishop of Oregon City , Alexander Christie , gave him on 25 July of the same year, the episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Spokane , Augustine Francis Schinner , and the Bishop of Seattle , Edward John O'Dea .

His grave is in a chapel on Shrine Island near Juneau.
