history

The two previous municipalities Lauterecken and Wolfstein were created in 1971 as part of the first administrative reform in Rhineland-Palatinate . Previously, the administrative structures originating from the Palatinate (Bavaria) (1816–1946) essentially applied in the then administrative district of Palatinate .

On September 28, 2010 the state government passed the “First Law on Local and Administrative Reform” with the aim of improving the efficiency, competitiveness and administrative power of local structures. For municipalities it was determined that they should include at least 12,000 inhabitants (main residence on June 30, 2009). Otherwise, they should be merged with neighboring municipalities by the 2014 local elections. The so-called voluntary phase ended on June 30, 2012.

Based on the resolutions of the two municipal councils and almost all 41 local councils, the mayors Michael Kolter (Wolfstein municipality) and Egbert Jung (Lauterecken municipality) signed a merger agreement.

In the "State Law on the Voluntary Formation of the New Association of Lauterecken-Wolfstein" of November 22, 2013, it was stipulated that the seat of the new association is the city of Lauterecken and that there will be a second administrative office in the city of Wolfstein .

The state grants the new community of Lauterecken-Wolfstein a one-time, resident-related allocation of 1,019,700 euros on the occasion of its voluntary formation. In addition, the association receives an allocation of 2,000,000 euros to reduce its liabilities.

"Pfälzer Bergland" had also been suggested as the name for the new community.
