The Verbandsgemeinde Kusel-Altenglan is an association municipality in the district of Kusel in Rhineland-Palatinate . It was created on January 1, 2018 from the voluntary merger of the municipalities of Altenglan and Kusel . The city of Kusel and 33 independent local communities belong to it, and the administrative center is in Kusel.
Around 23,000 people live in the 34 parishes belonging to it.

history
On September 28, 2010 the state government passed the “First Law on Local and Administrative Reform” with the aim of improving the efficiency, competitiveness and administrative power of local structures. For municipalities it was determined that they should include at least 12,000 inhabitants (main residence on June 30, 2009). With 10,357 inhabitants, the Altenglan community fell short of the minimum number of residents , while the Kusel community had 13,658 residents on the reporting date.
On February 24, 2016, the “State law on the merger of the municipalities of Altenglan and Kusel” was passed in the state parliament. The law stipulates that on January 1, 2018, a new community will be formed from the previous municipalities of Altenglan and Kusel, which will be called "Kusel-Altenglan". The seat of their administration is the city of Kusel .
On the occasion of the formation of the new association community, the state granted an allocation of 2,000,000 euros.

Association municipal council
The first elections for the municipal council and the mayor of the new municipality will take place before the change of territory. The election day for this is set by the district administration of the Kusel district.
The election took place on June 11, 2017 in a personalized proportional representation . The following distribution of seats resulted:

In the election on June 11, 2017, Stefan Spitzer (CDU) was elected mayor of the new community with 66.60% of the vote .
The election times of the previous municipal councils of the municipalities of Altenglan and Kusel as well as the term of office of the previous mayor of the municipality of Altenglan ended prematurely on December 31, 2017. The next election of the municipal council of the new municipality will take place from April 1st to June 30th Will take place in 2024.
