The summit of the 562 meter high Potzberg with the 35 meter high Potzberg tower is in the Föckelberg district as is part of the Potzberg wildlife park . To the east are Niederstaufenbach and Oberstaufenbach , to the south is Neunkirchen am Potzberg .
history
Föckelberg appears for the first time in 1393 as "Fockelnberg" in a letter to Wittum from Count Friedrich III. from Veldenz up. At that time Föckelberg belonged to the Reichenbach mayor's workshop. Further names are: 1460 Feckelnberg, 1482 Fuckelnberg, 1567 Feckelnbergk, 1571 Feckelburg, 1578 Feckelberg, 1588 Ferckelberg, 1593 Feckelberg, early 17th century Föckelburg, 1671 Vöckelberg and 1824 Feckelberg. The place name is made up of the basic word mountain and the personal name Folkilo, modified Fockilo. Thus the place name is interpreted as "Mountain of Fockilo".
In the 18th and 19th centuries, mining on cinnabar ore was carried out in the Föckelberger district. There were, among others, the following pits: Elisabethengrube (18th / 19th century), Hütschbacher Werk (1782–1783), Faulborn and Hellewalterdöll (1785–1786), Freier Wille (around 1787 to 19th century, Hutschbach tub), Imperial train (1780–1788, Gewannen Faulenborn and Bösenborn), David crown (1783 to 19th century, Gewanne Davidskron-Lichtenkopf), Sebastiansgrube (1787–1788, Gewannen Am Turm and Hazelrech) and Pottaschrecke, St. Christian (1774–1789), Vogelacker (1787–1789, Gewannen Vogelacker and Horst), Josephskron (1774–1783, Gewanne Vogelacker), Kloppwald (1781–1789), Im Segen Gottes (1774–1777), Die Langehohl (1781). Many of these pits were short lived due to poor yield. Of the above listed on Föckelberger district, only the Elisabethengrube (most productive mine on Föckelberg district), David crown and Freier Wille were operated in 1807.
Föckelberg built his own schoolhouse in 1824 and received his own teacher after the students had previously attended school in Neunkirchen am Potzberg. Jakob Braun, born on the Ritschmühle near Kusel, was the first teacher in Föckelberg. Since the school was built with community funds, they attended both Protestant and Catholic children. In 1897 the old schoolhouse was demolished and a new schoolhouse was built as a one-story classroom according to plans by district master builder Kleinhans and an additional storey was added in 1903. The school house is used today as a village community center.
Föckelberg belongs to the Protestant parish Neunkirchen am Potzberg and the Catholic parish Reichenbach-Steegen. In 1854 the municipality of Föckelberg laid out its own cemetery, which is still in use today.
In the monument topography of the Kusel district, the following is said about the expansion of the village: “The place, which was laid out as a street village, expanded in the 18th century about as far as it does today, because there are larger courtyards from this time both at its southern end (Brunnenstrasse 3 ) as well as on the northern one (Eckstrasse 9). The later development only led to greater densification along the street. Of these buildings that were added later, a single-storey, one-room-deep day laborer's house at the Vogelacker 6 estate is particularly noteworthy. It consists of two rooms arranged next to one another and has a small stable connected at right angles. The tiny property, which is now used as a sheepfold, was built in the second half of the 19th century. And shows the unimaginably simple living conditions of some villagers. "
The Kerwe was previously celebrated on the third weekend in October, today it takes place in July.
The former natural monuments include the "Kalescheiche" in the Potzbergwald (now replanted) and the three "Hutbuchen" at the north entrance to the community.
