history
The place was first mentioned in 1477 as Wanwegen .
As part of the Remigiusland, the place initially belonged to the County of Veldenz , and when its male line died out in 1444, it fell to the newly formed County of Pfalz-Zweibrücken , whose further fate Wahnwegen now shared.
The Thirty Years' War hit particularly hard. While 82 inhabitants were recorded in 1609, there were only 15 again in the second half of the century. In the course of the 18th century the numbers increased, by the next turn of the century the population had grown to about 300 people.
From 1801 to 1814 Wahnwegen belonged to France as part of the Saar Department , Arrondissement Birkenfeld , Canton Kusel, Mairie Quirnbach. At the Congress of Vienna , the Palatinate on the left bank of the Rhine fell to Austria in 1815 and to the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1816 on the basis of an exchange contract . The place has now been assigned to the Kusel Land Commissioner , Quirnbach Mayor's Office, in the Bavarian Rhine District.
Agriculture shaped the place well into the 20th century, but was gradually pushed back in the previous century. A growing workforce initially found employment in the quarries in the area and in the coal mines and ironworks of the Saarland, while nowadays the majority of the villagers pursue a wide range of activities as commuters.
After the Second World War , Wahnwegen became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate within the French occupation zone . In the course of the first Rhineland-Palatinate administrative reform , the place was assigned to the Verbandsgemeinde Glan-Münchweiler in 1972 , which became part of the Verbandsgemeinde Oberes Glantal in 2017 .
