Medard is a municipality in the Kusel district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Lauterecken-Wolfstein association.
geography
Medard is located on the Glan River in the West Palatinate . Lauterecken is to the southwest and Odenbach is to the northeast . The place is surrounded by hills with orchards. You can go hiking and canoeing on the Glan from Medard.
history
There is a Celtic refuge on site, Medard Castle . Later Romans also lived here. In the 1970s, the remains of the largest villa rustica in the West Palatinate were excavated in the area of the church . The place was first mentioned in 1156 as "curia sancti Medardi" . It is named after Saint Medardus . Two funnel kilns for lime production were in operation between 1820 and 1900. From 1816 to 1866 Medard belonged to the Oberamt Meisenheim of the Landgraviate of Hessen-Homburg and came with this to Prussia in 1866 . The Glantalbahn has been running through the town since the 19th century.
politics
Municipal council
The council in Medard consists of eight council members, who in the local elections on May 26, 2019 in a majority vote were elected, and the honorary mayor as chairman. Until 2014, the municipality council had twelve council members.
mayor
Albert Graf became the local mayor of Medard in 2009. Since there was no candidate for the direct election on May 26, 2019, the upcoming election of the mayor was carried out by the council in accordance with the municipal regulations. On July 1, 2019, he unanimously confirmed Albert Graf for a further five years in his office.
Protestant church
The Romanesque church in the village is now Protestant . It stands on the site of a presumably existing chapel there. In the chancel arch are the dates 1262 and 1597. The tower and parts of the central nave are certainly older than 1262. There were several changes to the church, particularly significant in the years 1592 to 1597. Perhaps the two aisles were added at that time ; Also at that time two intermediate pillars were probably removed from each of the two side walls of the central nave in order to unify the space as a preaching church in accordance with the Reformed tradition. The choir, which had become dilapidated, was demolished in 1887 and replaced by a new one.
Economy and Infrastructure
The federal highway 420 runs through the village . In 1896 it was connected to the railway network by opening the Lauterecken – Odernheim line, which was built as a direct continuation of the Lautertal Railway. In 1904, this section merged with the Glantalbahn , which was fully opened that year , but has since been closed. There is a trolley service on it for day trippers . In Lauterecken there is a station of the Lautertalbahn .
