Ruthweiler is a municipality in the Kusel district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Kusel-Altenglan community , within which it is the eighth smallest local community in terms of area.
geography
location
The local community is located in the North Palatinate Bergland within its sub-area Kuseler Bergland . Lichtenberg Castle, which towers above the village , is the largest castle complex in the Palatinate and is already on the border of the neighboring village. Neighboring communities are Thallichtenberg and Körborn in the north, the city of Kusel (districts Diedelkopf and Bledesbach ) in the east and south, and Pfeffelbach in the west.
Elevations and waters
Ruthweiler is located in the narrow valley of the Pfeffelbach , which is alternatively called Aalbach in this area in the lower reaches. The hills reach up to 442.5 meters to the right of the brook with the wooded Niederberg, and to the left of the brook about 350 meters above sea level. Behind Ruthweiler the brook breaks through the mountain plateau and flows in a rocky gorge towards Thallichtenberg.
history
The place originally consisting of Niederruthweiler and Oberruthweiler was first mentioned in 1271 as Nyderrudewilre . He belonged to the truce of Lichtenberg Castle. During the early modern period, the community was part of the County of Veldenz and from 1733 the Electoral Palatinate .
After the Left Bank of the Rhine was taken by French revolutionary troops (1794), Ruth belonged to the Saar department from 1798 to 1814 and was incorporated into the canton of Baumholder during this time .
In 1816 Ruthweiler came to the Principality of Lichtenberg , a newly created exclave of the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld and from 1826 of the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha . During this time it was subordinate to the mayor's office in Burglichtenberg . With the said duchy it fell to Prussia in 1834 , which created the district of Sankt Wendel from this area . After the main part was separated from the newly created Saar area , the remaining district of Sankt Wendel-Baumholder was created in 1920 , to which the place belonged until 1937, when it was incorporated into the Birkenfeld district.
After the Second World War , Ruthweiler became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate within the French occupation zone . In the course of the first administrative reform in Rhineland-Palatinate , the community was reclassified to the Kusel district on June 7, 1969 . Three years later, the place became part of the newly created Kusel Association , and Ruthweiler has been part of the Kusel-Altenglan Association since 2018 .
