history
"Neunkirchen" am Potzberg is mentioned for the first time in 1329 in a document.
The place bears the name of its church in the place name. The “new church” presumably received this to distinguish it from the old Peterskirche of Theisbergstegen , which served as the mother church of Neunkirchen. Up until the Reformation there was a chapel in Neunkirchen at the site of the current “Union Church”, which was consecrated to Saint Cyriacus . The Cyriakus Market took place on the Kirchberg on the saint's name day, August 8th. In the 17th century, this market was successively replaced by the Jakobskerwe, which is celebrated to the present day.
During the Reformation the chapel was transformed into a Lutheran parish church. The old Gothic church, with its massive round tower, vaulted choir and stone pulpit, was supposedly rebuilt under Count Palatine Leopold Ludwig von Pfalz-Veldenz . In 1750, a reformed church was built in Neunkirchen on the Kirchberg after the reformed had gathered for it all over Germany and beyond. In the Palatinate Church Union of 1818, the Lutherans and Reformed were amalgamated. In 1825 this union found visible expression in the new building of today's “Union Church”. The architect of this church was Paul von Denis , a royal Bavarian engineer and known as the builder of the Palatinate Ludwig Railway . A Gothic pointed arch window is reminiscent of the old predecessor church from the Middle Ages. After the renovation, the old organ with its magnificent prospect is now playable again, built in 1784 by the Meisenheim organ builder Philipp Daniel Schmitt.
From 1798 to 1814, when the Palatinate was part of the French Republic (until 1804) and then part of the Napoleonic Empire , the place was incorporated into the canton of Wolfstein . In 1815 Neunkirchen initially belonged to Austria . After the Congress of Vienna , it was added to Bavaria a year later . From 1818 to 1862 the community continued to belong to the canton of Wolfstein and was part of the Kusel Land Commissioner , which was then converted into a district office.
In 1939 the place was incorporated into the Kusel district. After the Second World War , Neunkirchen am Potzberg became part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate within the French occupation zone . In the course of the first administrative reform in Rhineland-Palatinate , the community became part of the Altenglan community in 1972 . The place has belonged to the Kusel-Altenglan community since 2018 .
