The Fritz-Wunderlich-Weg is a hiking and cycling path named after the opera tenor Fritz Wunderlich , who was born in Kusel , through the St. Wendeler Land and the Westrich on the edge of the North Palatinate Bergland . It has a length of 24 km and is marked with a black eighth note on a white background. It runs through the federal states of Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate .

The route begins in Freisen, Saarland, at the town's former train station ( Füsselberg ). It leads over the route of the former Türkismühle – Kusel railway line . First you pass the Iron Bridge (141 m long, 27 m high) above the Johanneshof.

The path then leads around the Weiselberg to Oberkirchen , offering numerous views of the northern Saarland. In Oberkirchen the hiker / cyclist crosses the valley of the Oster on the valley bridge Oberkirchen , one of the largest stone bridges in Germany; We continue through a 216 m long tunnel (lighting switches on automatically) to Schwarzerden with its late antique Mithras relief.

In Schwarzerden, hikers / cyclists come across the Ostertalbahn , which is still in operation sporadically as a tourist train. You have to briefly leave the railway line at the former station in Schwarzerden , before the path - on the border between Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate - following the route again Pfeffelbach , through a second, 143 m long tunnel Thallichtenberg , Ruthweiler , Diedelkopf and finally after a total of 24 km reached the district town of Kusel .

In Thallichtenberg there is the opportunity to make a detour to Lichtenberg Castle , a restored complex with several museums, a church and a restaurant, and a variant of the route via Oberalben , Mayweilerhof and Blaubach back on the Fritz-Wunderlich-Weg.
