The Verbandsgemeinde Oberes Glantal is an administrative unit in the legal form of a regional authority in the Kusel district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It was created on January 1st, 2017 from the voluntary amalgamation of the municipalities of Glan-Münchweiler , Schönenberg-Kübelberg and Waldmohr . 23 independent local communities belong to it, the administrative seat is in Schönenberg-Kübelberg .

history
On September 28, 2010 the state government passed the “First Law on Local and Administrative Reform” with the aim of improving the efficiency, competitiveness and administrative power of local structures. For municipalities it was determined that they should include at least 12,000 inhabitants (main residence on June 30, 2009). This population was not reached by the municipalities of Glan-Münchweiler and Waldmohr.
On July 13, 2016, the “State law on the amalgamation of the municipalities Glan-Münchweiler, Schönenberg-Kübelberg and Waldmohr” was passed in the state parliament. The law stipulates that on January 1, 2017, a new community will be formed from the previous three association communities, which will be called "Upper Glantal". The seat of their administration is Schönenberg-Kübelberg .
On the occasion of the formation of the new association, the state granted an allocation of 3,000,000 euros.

The election times of the previous municipal councils of the municipalities Glan-Münchweiler, Schönenberg-Kübelberg and Waldmohr as well as the terms of office of the previous mayors ended prematurely on December 31, 2016.

The Verbandsgemeinderat Oberes Glantal consists of 36 honorary council members, who were elected in a personalized proportional representation in the local elections on May 26, 2019 , and the full-time mayor as chairman.

On December 18, 2016, Christoph Lothschütz (CDU) was directly elected full-time mayor of the new municipality in a runoff election with 68.54% . His eight-year term began on January 1, 2017.
