The Herz-Jesu-Kloster St. Adelheid is located in the Bonn district of Pützchen-Bechlinghoven at the address Am Herz-Jesu-Kloster 22 . It was founded in 1920 by the Sisters of the Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and ran the Sankt-Adelheid-Gymnasium here until 1985 .

history

In 1920, the Sacred Heart Order acquired the site of the former Pützchen sanatorium , which also included the building of a former Carmelite monastery for the care of pilgrims to the Adelheidis fountain . The nuns of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (self-name) founded a monastery ( Provincial Pützchen) and set up a school for girls with an attached boarding school in the old monastery buildings. The theologian Romano Guardini lived as a chaplain in the monastery in the early 1920s. In 1925, a new school building was built on the site, incorporating the substance of the sanatorium, at today's Pützchens Chaussee 133 . In 1926 the order sold part of the property, including the old monastery buildings, to the Discalced Carmelite Sisters from Cologne , who founded the Carmel of St. Joseph here . In the 1920s and 1930s, Mother Tiefenbacher, as Maîtresse générale, was the senior sister for extracurricular matters.

During the Second World War , the order in Pützchen was expropriated. The Wehrmacht made the nuns compulsory, so their expulsion could be prevented. After an emergency school could still be maintained at the beginning of the war, the school had to be closed in 1940 because it was to be used as a hospital. Here the nuns were used to care for the wounded. The monastery building of the neighboring Carmelites was also converted into a hospital by the Wehrmacht and placed under the management of the Sacred Heart Nuns (the Carmelites had been driven out). After the end of the war, the hospital was initially taken over and continued by the occupying powers. In 1946 the school, which from 1945 had been accommodated in the old monastery building, was reopened in the schoolhouse.

Until 1977 the school administration was with the order, which also provided part of the teaching staff. In 1951, the former actress Isa Vermehren joined the order in Pützchen. From 1961 she headed the Sankt-Adelheid-Gymnasium. Vermehren left Pützchen in 1969 to take over the management of the Sacré Cœur School in Hamburg . Her successor as the last headmistress of the Order was Sister Eileen Smith until 1977. In old age, Vermehren returned to the monastery and died there in 2009.

In 1979 the boarding school was closed by the order. When the sisters had been unable to financially support the school operations since the early 1980s due to the growing number of pupils, the Archdiocese of Cologne also took over responsibility for the school in 1985. The so-called “half boarding school”, an afternoon care, was run by the sisters until 2010.

The empty boarding school building from 1971 was converted into a new monastery building for the nuns in the early 2000s. The originally angular structure was added to the main building of the school. The conversion separated this part from the school building in order to be perceived as an independent and representative monastery building. A chapel extension was integrated into the overall concept. Only the concrete core, the ceiling slabs and the concrete supports were taken over from the former boarding school building. The previous angular floor plan was expanded to a U-shape, on the side of which the white circular chapel is inserted. The renovation costs amounted to 3.3 million euros, the completion took place in 2004. 34 apartments and various common rooms were created on an area of almost 3,000 square meters.
