history
First wooden towers
In the past there have been several observation towers on the Potzberg. There is an indication of a wooden observation tower built as early as 1815 at the time of Napoleon, which was later followed by two more wooden towers. The last of these towers was eventually demolished after being badly damaged by a storm.
Moserturm
In 1893 the octagonal stone Moserturm, a little over twelve meters high, was built, which was named after Johann Baptist Moser, the Forestry Assessor who worked on the Potzberg. It survived both world wars and was raised in 1947 with scaffolding because of tall trees, but after a few years it was no longer visible. In 1951 the Moserturm was finally torn down to enable a new tower to be built.
Today's tower
Today's Potzberg Tower was built between October 13, 1951 and December 2, 1951 and consists of a 35 meter high brick tower with a base area of 4 by 7 meters on which the 18.5 meter high antenna carrier is located. It was inaugurated on July 13, 1952.
Access to the tower is on its southeast side. A wooden staircase leads over 10 concrete platforms to a false ceiling, at the height of which various antennas are attached to the outside of the tower on a concrete slab and an L-shaped metal grille. A 12-step spiral staircase leads to the platform level on the northeast side of the tower, which takes up about half of its floor space, protrudes slightly over the outer walls of the tower and is about 32 meters high. The closed superstructure located above the stairwell on the southwest side of the tower reaches a height of 35 meters and serves as a platform for the antenna carrier.
From the viewing platform there is a good view mainly from the northwest via the northeast to the southeast.
Originally an 18.5 meter high radio antenna on the platform completed the structure. From here the radio programs of the then Südwestfunk were broadcast until the 1990s. The stations of today's Südwestrundfunk have meanwhile been relocated to the nearby Bornberg location .
The Potzberg Tower has been closed to visitors since around May 2017, as a tour of the building management of the district administration revealed significant defects in the staircase.
