The Roman Catholic Diocese of Stockton ( Latin Dioecesis Stocktoniensis , English Diocese of Stockton ) is in the United States located Roman Catholic diocese , based in Stockton , California .

history

The Stockton Bishopric was founded on January 13, 1962 by Pope John XXIII. established with the Apostolic Constitution Ineunte vere from cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of San Francisco and the Diocese of Sacramento and subordinated to the Archdiocese of San Francisco as a suffragan . On September 15, 1966, the Alpine County area was incorporated into the Stockton Bishopric .

In January 2014, the diocese declared insolvency under Chapter 11 of US bankruptcy law. This was due to compensation payments equivalent to around ten million euros, which it had to make as a result of several cases of child abuse . The diocese is the tenth in the United States to take this step.

The Diocese of Stockton includes the areas of Alpine County, Calaveras County , Mono County , San Joaquin County , Solano County , Stanislaus County and Tuolumne County in the state of California .
