Hugh Aloysius Donohoe

Hugh Aloysius Donohoe (born June 28, 1905 in San Francisco , † October 26, 1987 ) was Bishop of Fresno and previously the first Bishop of Stockton .

Life

Hugh Aloysius Donohoe studied at Saint Patrick's Seminary in Menlo Park , California . After his ordination to the priesthood on June 14, 1930 for the Archdiocese of San Francisco , he received at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC the doctorate in philosophy . Donohoe then returned to Saint Patrick's Seminary and taught ethics there .

Pope Pius XII appointed him on August 2, 1947 titular bishop of Taium and auxiliary bishop in San Francisco. The Archbishop of San Francisco, John Joseph Mitty , ordained him episcopal on October 7th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Honolulu , James Joseph Sweeney , and Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Arthur Connolly of San Francisco.

On January 27, 1962, Pope John XXIII appointed him . first bishop of the newly formed Stockton Diocese . His inauguration on April 24 of the same year was attended by several priests from his home archdiocese of San Francisco.

Donohoe participated in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council as a council father. So his job in Stockton was not only to advance the development of the new diocese, but also to implement the vision of the council.

On August 22, 1969 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. appointed Bishop of Fresno. On July 1, 1980, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.

Donohoe died on October 26, 1987 and was buried in Saint Peters Cemetery in Fresno .

His motto was In all things charity (“In all things mercy”).
