territory

The Fresno Diocese is made up of the counties Fresno , Inyo , Kern , Kings , Madera , Merced , Mariposa and Tulare . Within the Bishops' Conference of the United States , it is assigned to Region XI, which includes the states of California, Hawaii, and Nevada .

history

The diocese was founded on October 6, 1967 from a division of the diocese of Monterey-Fresno , which had existed since 1922 . Timothy Manning was appointed first bishop of the diocese . The area of the diocese defined at that time has not changed since then. The number of Catholics when it was founded was approximately 307,000.

In 2010, the number of Catholics in the diocese was estimated at 1,084,000, the proportion of the total population was 39%.

cartridge

The patroness of the diocese is St. Therese von Lisieux , a religious who died in 1897 and is venerated today as a doctor of the church . Pope Pius XI she canonized in 1925. During a visit to Rome shortly before the canonization, the bishop of the then diocese of Monterey-Fresno , John Bernard MacGinley , asked the Holy Father to appoint Therese of Lisieux patroness of the diocese. However, since no church was consecrated in the diocese of the saints, but this was a prerequisite for the granting of patronage, the bishop renamed a newly formed parish in Fresno to St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus .

With St. Columban of Iona , the diocese has another, secondary patron. He was an Irish monk who died in 597. Columban served as a missionary in Scotland .

As the patron saint of the city of Fresno itself, the martyr Agnes of Rome is particularly venerated. A hospital in Fresno is named after her.
