The Grand Island diocese ( Latin : Dioecesis Insulae Grandis ) is located in the USA and is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church with its seat in Grand Island , Nebraska . It was established on March 8, 1912 as the Diocese of Kearney from areas of the Diocese of Omaha , from which it was given further areas on May 13, 1916.

As early as April 11, 1917, the name of the diocese was changed to the current name Grand Island . When the diocese of Omaha was raised to the archbishopric in 1945, Grand Island was subordinated to this as a suffragan diocese.

The territory of the Grand Island Diocese now includes the areas of Buffalo County , Sherman County , Valley County , Garfield County , Loup County , Custer County , Blaine County , Brown County , Keya Paha County , Logan County , Thomas County , Hooker County , McPherson County , Grant County , Cherry County , Rock County , Garden County , Deuel County , Morrill County , Cheyenne County , Kimball County , Banner County , Box Butte County , Scotts Bluff County , Sioux County , Dawes County and Sheridan County and parts of Dawson County , Lincoln County and Keith County .
