Stanislaus Vincent Bona
Stanislaus Vincent Bona (born October 1, 1888 in Chicago , Illinois , † December 1, 1967 in Green Bay ) was an American clergyman and Catholic bishop of Grand Island and Green Bay .
Life
The son of Polish immigrants initially studied at St. Stanislaus College in his native city and went to Rome in 1905, where he continued his studies at the Pontifical North American College . Here he did his doctorate in theology and obtained a licentiate in canon law . On November 1, 1912 Bona was by Archbishop James Edward Quigley of Chicago for priests ordained . Various activities in pastoral care and a teaching position at the Archbishop Quigley Seminary in Chicago followed.
Pope Pius XI appointed Bona bishop of Grand Island, Nebraska, on December 18, 1931 . He received his episcopal ordination on February 25, 1932 in Chicago Cathedral from Cardinal George William Mundelein . Co- consecrators were Bishops Paul Peter Rhode of Green Bay and Francis Martin Kelly of Winona .
Bishop Bona led his diocese during the Great Depression and World War II . Bona, who speaks fluent German and Italian, personally took over pastoral care for the prisoners of war housed in his diocese during the war .
On December 2, 1944, Pope Pius XII appointed Bona as Coadjutor Bishop for the Diocese of Green Bay and Titular Bishop of Mela . With the death of Bishop Rhodes on March 3, 1945, he followed this as the seventh Bishop of Green Bay. In the following years he promoted educational work in his diocese by founding over 70 schools. He set accents in charitable work, u. a. for migrant workers, and initiated the establishment of its own diocese newspaper.
Stanislaus Vincent Bona attended the second session of the Second Vatican Council as a council father .
