history

Archbishopric Cathedral

The forerunner of the archbishopric was the diocese of Monterey in California , which was founded on April 27, 1840 by Pope Gregory XVI. established with the Apostolic Constitution Apostolicam sollicitudinem from cession of territory of the Diocese of Sonora as a diocese of both California and was subordinate to the Archdiocese of Mexico City as a suffragan . The diocese of both California was divided after the cession of Mexico in the Mexican-American War on November 20, 1849 and the now American northern part was renamed the Diocese of Monterey . On July 29, 1853, the diocese of Monterey gave up parts of its territory to establish the Archdiocese of San Francisco , to which it was subordinated as a suffragan. The diocese of Monterey was renamed the Diocese of Monterey-Los Angeles on July 7, 1859 .

On June 1, 1922, the diocese of Monterey-Los Angeles was by Pope Pius XI. divided into the dioceses of Los Angeles-San Diego and Monterey-Fresno with the Bull Romani Pontifices . Due to the constant increase in the Catholic population, it split on July 11, 1936 through the bull Ad spirituale christianae into the dioceses of Los Angeles (with a simultaneous increase to the archbishopric) and San Diego . Inaugurated in 2002, Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels ( Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels ) replaced in 1994 by an earthquake badly damaged Cathedral of Saint Vibiana . The architect of the futuristic new building was the Spanish architect and winner of the renowned Pritzker architecture prize Rafael Moneo .

Sexual abuse by priests

In July 2007, shortly before a series of abuse lawsuits were planned to begin, the archdiocese reached an out-of-court settlement of US $ 660 million in compensation for victims of clergy sexual abuse. More than 500 victims had complained. Some of the abuse cases date back to the 1940s. A spokesman for a victims' association spoke of an important step and success for those who broke the silence about the crimes. Others regretted that Church officials no longer have to face court questions about sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church . The question of whether and to what extent Cardinal Mahony and his predecessors hindered investigative work by the police authorities and hushed up cases of abuse remains unanswered for the time being. Mahony was accused of this in the Academy Award nominated documentary Deliver Us from Evil . In order to raise the money for the compensation payments, real estate must be sold and areas of church work restricted, among other things.

In November 2018, through the publication of personnel files, it became known that priests suspected of sexual abuse in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles had been housed in non-English-speaking immigrant communities for decades. Victims of abuse across California called on the county attorney to investigate the sexual offense and cover-up cases.
