history

The first Roman Catholic missionary station in Delaware was established in New Castle County in 1804, while a part of Maryland (east of Chesapeake Bay) had Roman Catholic settlers as early as the 17th century.

The diocese of Wilmington was on March 3, 1868 by Pope Pius IX. established from cessions of territory by the Archdiocese of Baltimore and the Diocese of Philadelphia . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Baltimore as a suffragan . In 1974, the two counties of Virginia east of Chesapeake Bay were spun off from the diocese and assigned to the Diocese of Richmond .

On October 19, 2009, the diocese became the seventh US diocese to file for bankruptcy with the competent court and apply for bankruptcy protection . The background is pending civil proceedings as a result of the sexual abuse of persons by diocesan employees.
