Michael Angelo Saltarelli (born January 17, 1933 in Jersey City , New Jersey , United States , † October 8, 2009 ) was Roman Catholic Bishop of Wilmington .

Life

Michael Angelo Saltarelli, one of seven children of an Italian immigrant family, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Roman Catholic Seton Hall University in 1956 . He then studied Catholic theology at Immaculate Conception Seminary in Darlington and received on 28 May 1960 in the Basilica of Newark the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Newark Archbishop Thomas Aloysius Boland . He was a pastoral worker in Nutley from 1960 to 1977 and studied religious studies at Manhattan College . From 1977 to 1982 he was pastor in Bayonne . Archbishop Peter Leo Gerety appointed him director of pastoral services for the Archdiocese of Newark in 1982. In 1984 John Paul II made him an honorary prelate with the title of Monsignor . In 1985 he became a pastor at Cedar Grove . In 1987 he was named Episcopal Vicar for the Priests of the Archdiocese of Newark by Archbishop Theodore E. McCarrick , and later he was the Archdiocese Priesthood Chairman and President of the Diocesan Administrative Council and School Inspectorate and Dean of North Essex and Bayonne.

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Mesarfelta and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Newark in 1990 . Theodore Edgar McCarrick , Archbishop of Newark and later Cardinal, donated him episcopal ordination on July 30, 1990 ; Co-consecrators were Old Archbishop Peter Leo Gerety and Auxiliary Bishop John Mortimer Fourette Smith of Newark. He was also the rector of Newark Cathedral and other diocesan offices. For the Columbus Knights in New Jersey he was involved as a chaplain .

On November 21, 1995, he was named eighth Bishop of Wilmington by Pope John Paul II . The inauguration followed on January 23 of the following year. On December 1, 2008, his age-related resignation by Pope Benedict XVI. granted.
