Bishop John Capricorn

John Thomas Steinbock (born July 16, 1937 in Los Angeles , California , † December 5, 2010 in Fresno , California) was an American clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Fresno .

Life

John Steinbock was born in Los Angeles . He resigned in 1957 in the St. John's Seminary in Camarillo and was on May 1, 1963 in Los Angeles by Archbishop James Francis Cardinal McIntyre for priests ordained . After various pastoral work in East Los Angeles , he was called to the Cathedral of St. Vibiana of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles .

On May 29, 1984, Pope John Paul II named Capricorn Titular Bishop of Midila and Auxiliary Bishop in Orange, California . On July 14, 1984 he received the episcopal ordination through Timothy Cardinal Manning ; Co- consecrators were Bishops William Robert Johnson of Orange and Manuel Duran Moreno of Tucson .

Capricorn was named Bishop of Santa Rosa on January 27, 1987 , and instituted on March 31 of the same year. During his time in Santa Rosa he stood up for the Hispanics and homeless people in his diocese, but also for the priests, especially those in retirement.

He was appointed Bishop of Fresno on October 15, 1991. The inauguration took place on November 24th of the same year.

In August 2010, Capricorn announced that he had been diagnosed with lung cancer. He was admitted to St. Agnes Medical Center in Fresno about a month before his death . After the bishop's health deteriorated in the weeks that followed, Capricorn died on December 5, 2010 in St. Agnes Hospital in his episcopal city. He was buried in Saint Peters Cemetery in Fresno.

Capricorn's motto was All for the love of God ("Everything for the love of God").
