The Hard Wax is a record shop for electronic music and reggae / dub and later also dubstep in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg . It is one of the oldest well-stocked record stores in the field of electronic music and is an important communication point for the international techno scene . He is also said to have played a key role in the development of the techno scene in the early 1990s.
The Hard Wax is managed by the music producer and label owner Mark Ernestus . It opened in December 1989 and was initially located in a shop on the ground floor of a residential building on Reichenberger Strasse together with the Basic Channel label's studio . In 1996 the shop moved to the third floor of a factory floor in a backyard on Paul-Lincke-Ufer . The employees included DJs and musicians such as DJ Hell , Torsten Pröfrock , Marcel Dettmann , Modeselektor , DJ Rok , Gabriele "Mo" Loschelder , René Pawlowitz and Electric Indigo , who was responsible for sales from 1993 to 1996. From 1994 there was a branch of the shop in Saarbrücken for a few years .
Like Club Tresor , for example , the Hard Wax maintained a constant exchange with musicians of Detroit Techno , who in turn are musically strongly oriented towards European styles, and is therefore a central facility of the so-called "Berlin-Detroit axis". In addition to the mail order business with records , digital formats are also offered online. 50 percent of the business in 2009 was via mail order.
