Stanislaus County is a county in the state of California . The county seat is Modesto .

The county is located between Stockton and Fresno in the Central Valley and is bordered clockwise by counties: Calaveras County , Tuolumne County , Merced County , Santa Clara County, and San Joaquin Counties .
history
Stanislaus County was formed in 1854 from parts of Tuolumne County . The county is named after the Stanislaus River . This river was first discovered by Gabriel Moraga in 1806 and later named "Rio Estanislao" in honor of Estanislao, a missionary chief of a local tribe who led a group of Indians against the Mexicans as a renegade until he was finally defeated by Mariano Vallejo in 1826 . His baptismal name Estanislao is the Spanish transcription for Stanislaus , the Latinized name of the Polish, Catholic saint and Bishop Stanisław of Cracow .
Stanislaus County has a National Historic Landmark , the Knight's Ferry Bridge . A total of 23 structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

According to the 2000 census , Stanislaus County had a population of 446,997 people. There were 145,146 households and 109,585 families. The population density was 116 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 69.33% White, 2.58% African American, 1.27% Native American, 4.22% Asian, 0.34% Pacific Islander, and 16.82% other races Groups; 5.44% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 31.74% of the population.
Of the 145,146 households, 41.20% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 56.00% were married couples living together, 13.70% were single mothers. 24.50% were not families. 19.40% are single households and 7.90% have someone living there who is 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 3.03 and the average family size was 3.47 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 31.10% residents under 18 years of age, 9.80% between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.00% between 25 and 44 years of age, 19.50% between 45 and 64 years of age 10.40% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 96.80 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 93.40 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 40,101 , and the median income for a family is $ 44,703. Males had a median income of $ 36,969 versus $ 26,595 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,913. 16.00% percent of the population and 12.30% of families are below the poverty line. 20.50% of these were under 18 years of age and 8.80% were 65 years of age or older.
