The Del Norte County is a county in the northwest of the state of California in the United States . The county is located on the Pacific Ocean and is bordered by Siskiyou County and Humboldt County . The county seat is Crescent City .

history

The area was formerly part of the "Klamath County" founded in 1851. The administrative seat was first further south on the coast in "Trinidad", from 1854 in Crescent City, from 1856 in "Orleans Bar" further inland. In 1857, part of Klamath County split off and has been called "Del Norte County" ever since. Klamath County existed until 1874 when it was split up.

In 1941, Del Norte was one of the counties that split from California and Oregon to create the 51st state, Jefferson . However, this secession failed.

12 of the county's structures and sites are on the National Register of Historic Places .

In Del Norte County there is only one city ("City") that performs administrative tasks. All other settlements are in community-free areas (abbreviated UIC for "Unincorporated Area"). The larger of these are shown separately for statistical purposes; these are referred to as census-designated place (CDP). All population figures mentioned refer to the 2010 census.

  • Klamath , CDP on the Klamath River with 779 residents. The original city center was west of the highway and was destroyed in the 1964 flood, with some streets and sidewalks still visible.
  • Requa (UIC) was founded in 1851. It is named after the place Rekwoi, which means the mouth of the stream in the Yurok language , but it was a mile upstream. Requa is located directly at the mouth of the river, but is safe from flooding due to its elevated position.
  • False Klamath (UIC)
  • False Klamath Cove, here Highway 101 leads about one kilometer along the beach
  • the “Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park”, which extends to the coast, was established in the 1920s and is now part of the Redwood National Park

  • Tryon Corner (UIC)
  • Yontocket (UIC) directly on the coast, here around 500 Indians from the Tolowa tribe died in a massacre in 1853 .
  • The place Smith River is a CDP with 866 inhabitants and is north of the Smith River of the same name
  • The road now runs along the coast again. The Pelican State Beach is the northernmost beach of California. Then the state border to Oregon follows.
