Jefferson was the proposed name for a state in the United States to be created from areas in southern Oregon and northern California at the request of a short-lived separatist campaign . The name goes back to Thomas Jefferson , the third President of the USA .

In October 1941, Port Orford, Oregon Mayor Gilbert Gable announced that Curry , Josephine , Jackson , Klamath Counties (all in southern Oregon), Del Norte , Siskiyou, and Modoc (in northern California) would become a new one Want to merge state. The reason was that the less technical areas felt neglected in relation to the rich south of California, ultimately the miserable condition of the roads was the decisive factor. Yreka in County Siskiyou became the provisional capital, its own flag and coat of arms were introduced. On November 27, 1941, the independence of Oregon and California was proclaimed, a group of armed men blocked Route 99 and distributed copies of the independence proclamation.

The secession ended quickly, however: First of all, the initiator, Mayor Gable, died on December 2nd, and another five days later, with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, more important national interests came to the fore.

Exactly 60 years later, in 2001, there was another campaign in northern California to establish a state of its own, Upstate California . The representatives of the secession assert the interests of rural areas against the policies of the state of California, which are determined by large cities and metropolitan areas. While a large part of their demands stem from the political right (gun control, role of the federal government), they also represent liberal or libertarian positions such as the legalization of marijuana.

After several years of low-level discussion, the Siskiyou County's Board of Directors voted four to one in early September 2013 to break away from California and establish Jefferson State . Central arguments were unemployment and hopelessness in the region, because traditional industries such as agriculture and forestry, as well as hunting and fishing with the corresponding tourist opportunities would be restricted too far by laws of the federal government with the approval of California.
