The Calaveras County is a county in the US state of California . The county seat is San Andreas . It is located in the middle of the state geographically.

history

Calaveras County was founded in 1850. In 1854, parts of its original territory were given to Alpine County . Other parts were added to Amador County in 1864 . Calaveras means skull . The county got its name from the Calaveras River , which was discovered on an expedition by the Spanish explorer Gabriel Moraga . Gabriel Moraga saw many skulls on the river bank, which inspired him to give the name.

In the 19th century, Calaveras County became internationally known for the 1865 short story by Mark Twain The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County . In honor of Mark Twain and his story, the Calaveras County Fairgrounds , Angels Camp celebrates a large festival every year in May, combined with a Jumping Frog Jubilee .

The Calaveras Big Trees State Park , founded in 1931, is one of the main attractions of the region with its gigantic Sequoia sequoia trees . The park covers an area of ​​2630 hectares.

15 of the county's structures are on the National Register of Historic Places .

According to the 2000 census , Calaveras County had 40,554 people. There were 16,469 households and 11,742 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 91.19% White, 0.75% African American, 1.74% Native American, 0.85% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, and 2.07% other races Groups; 3.31% were from two or more races. 6.82% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 16,469 households, 26.70% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 58.90% were married couples living together, 8.60% were single mothers. 28.70% were not families. 23.30% are single households and 10.10% have someone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.85.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.80% of residents under 18 years of age, 5.50% between 18 and 24 years of age, 22.40% between 25 and 44 years of age, 31.10% between 45 and 64 years of age 18.20% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 98.50 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 95.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 41,022 , and the median income for a family is $ 47,379. Males had a median income of $ 41,827 versus $ 28,108 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,420. 11.80% percent of the population and 8.70% of families are below the poverty line. 15.60% of them were under 18 years of age and 6.20% were 65 years of age or older.
