history
San Andreas was formed early during the gold rush from 1848 by Mexican prospectors. In 1850 the place consisted of over 1000 tents. A year later the first permanent building, called Bella Union, was erected. Bella Union was used as a saloon, amusement arcade, assembly room and courthouse. The San Andreas Nugget was found just north of the village in 1852 . The name is derived from the first church in the area, a wooden Catholic church built in 1853 and consecrated to St. Andrew . The place also gained a certain fame through the bandits Black Bart and Joaquin Murieta . The village burned down in 1858 and again in 1863.
The gold diggers were followed by other companies, from shops and banks to industry such as the Calaveras Cement Company . San Andreas has been the county seat and county court since 1866.
