Rafting on the North Fork Stanislaus River

The Stanislaus River in California is a right-hand tributary of the San Joaquin River with a length of 105 km. Its three headwaters North Fork , Middle Fork and South Fork arise in the Sierra Nevada , north of Yosemite National Park . The Stanislaus River was under the Central Valley Project strongly built and is to supply drinking water, dammed for irrigation of arable land and power generation several times. The main town on the river is Oakdale on the lower reaches.

The river is named after the Indian leader Estanislao , who protested in 1828 against the forced resettlements, during which the Mexican administration forced Indians from various peoples called Coastanoans into the area around San José . Estanislao, a Yokut , led a small group of rebellious Indians to the lower reaches of the river, where they built a village fortified with palisades . In the following year they were subdued by soldiers from the Presidio in San Francisco , Estanislao was able to escape and was pardoned a few years later.

After the flow of are Stanislaus National Forest , a National Forest around the upper reaches, and the Stanislaus County named.

North Fork and South Fork join a few miles upstream of New Melones Lake , while the Middle Fork joins the North Fork a few miles before it. The Stanislaus River is badly affected by damming and water discharge. The Donnells Dam at the Middle Fork forms Donell Lake in the high altitudes of the Sierra Nevada . Downstream lies the Beardsley Dam , which damms the river to Beardsley Lake . The McKays' Point Diversion Dam diverts water of the North Fork to generate electricity and provide drinking water to. The New Melones Dam dams the Stanislaus River after its three headwaters have merged. Below the New Melones Lake lies Tulloch Dam , said Tulloch reservoir forms, as well as the Goodwin Dam at 37 ° 51 '46 "  N , 120 ° 37' 47"  W located. The latter is the first major barrier for anadromous fish in the Stanislaus River . In fact, a large population of king salmon lived in the Stanislaus River in the historical past (McEwan 1996; Yoshiyama 1996), which was wiped out with the construction of the Goodwin Dam. To the northwest of Modesto , the Stanislaus River finally flows into the San Joaquin River. Thanks to the irrigation, the estuary is a wine-growing region known as the River Junction AVA .
