Louis Edward Gelineau

Louis Edward Gelineau (born May 3, 1928 in Burlington ) is Old Bishop of Providence .

Life

Louis Edward Gelineau studied at St. Paul's University in the Canadian capital Ottawa and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Burlington on June 5, 1953 . After receiving his doctorate in Canon Law in 1959, Pope John XXIII awarded him . 1961 the title of chaplain to His Holiness ( Monsignor ). In the same year Gelineau became chancellor of his home diocese of Burlington , to whose vicar general he rose in 1968.

Pope Paul VI appointed him Bishop of Providence on December 6, 1971 . The Bishop of Burlington, Robert Francis Joyce , ordained him bishop on January 26 of the next year ; Co-consecrators were Bernard Joseph Flanagan , Bishop of Worcester , and Edward Cornelius O'Leary , auxiliary bishop in Portland .

He resigned from his office on June 11, 1997, but remained active in pastoral work within the diocese. He was chaplain of the St. Antoine Residence in North Smithfield , Rhode Island until 2007 , where he has been living in retirement since 2014.
