Marcelo Pinto Carvalheira
Marcelo Pinto Carvalheira OSB (born May 1, 1928 in Recife ; † March 25, 2017 ibid) was a Brazilian religious and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Paraíba .
Life
Marcelo Pinto Carvalheira joined the Congregation of Benedictine at and studied theology and philosophy at the Archdiocesan seminary of Olinda and at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He was ordained a priest on February 28, 1953 in Rome . At the Gregoriana he received his doctorate in dogmatics in 1956 .
He was theology professor at the seminary of the Archdiocese of Olinda e Recife and later also spiritual . He was the first president of the supraregional seminary and secretary of the Northeast II region of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference (CNBB).
During the military dictatorship that had ruled since 1964 , he stood up for the persecuted. He was a supporter of Hélder Câmara and other Catholic opinion leaders; Pinto Carvalheira was arrested and tortured himself.
Pope Paul VI appointed him on October 29, 1975 titular bishop of Bitylius and auxiliary bishop in Paraíba. The Archbishop of Olinda e Recife, Hélder Câmara , gave him episcopal ordination on December 27 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were José Maria Pires , Archbishop of Paraíba, and Aloísio Lorscheider OFM , Archbishop of Fortaleza .
On November 9, 1981 he was appointed by Pope John Paul II as the first bishop of the newly established diocese of Guarabira . In the Brazilian Bishops' Conference he was from 1987 to 1991 and from 1995 to 1998 a member of the Episcopal Commission for Pastoral Care . There he was particularly responsible for the lay sector. He was named Archbishop of Paraíba on November 29, 1995, and took office on February 23 of the next year. From 1998 to 2004 Pinto Carvalheira was Vice President of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference.
On May 5, 2004, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation. Since his resignation, Marcelo Pinto Carvalheira lived in the Mosteiro de São Bento monastery in Olinda .
