José Maria Pires

José Maria Pires (born March 15, 1919 in Córregos , Brazil , † August 27, 2017 in Belo Horizonte ) was a Brazilian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Paraíba .

Life

José Maria Pires was ordained a priest on December 20, 1941 .

He was on May 25, 1957 by Pope Pius XII. appointed Bishop of Araçuaí . The Archbishop of Diamantina , José Newton de Almeida Baptista , donated him episcopal ordination on September 22nd of the same year ; Co- consecrators were José André Coimbra , Bishop of Patos de Minas , and João de Souza Lima , Bishop of Nazaré .

On December 2, 1965 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. appointed Archbishop of Paraíba. Pires was also a member of the central commission of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference .

On November 29, 1995, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation. He died in August 2017 in a hospital in Belo Horizonte at a pneumonia . In May of the same year he represented the Archdiocese of Paraiba at the plenary assembly of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference.
