James Bernard Reilly

James Bernard Reilly (born August 12, 1845 in Pinedale , Schuylkill County , Pennsylvania , †  May 14, 1924 in Pottsville , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1879 and again from 1889 to 1895 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Reilly attended public schools in his home country. In 1862 he graduated from Bunker Hill School in Pottsville. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1869, he began to work in this profession in Pottsville. Between 1871 and 1875 he was a district attorney in Schuylkill County. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1874 Reilly was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 13th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Republican James Dale Strawbridge on March 4, 1875 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1879 .

After the temporary end of his time in the US House of Representatives, James Reilly practiced as a lawyer again. In June 1880 he attended the Democratic National Convention in Cincinnati as a delegate . In 1881 and 1882 he applied unsuccessfully for two judge posts in his home district; In 1884 he sought unsuccessfully to return to Congress. In the elections of 1888 Reilly was then re-elected to Congress in the 13th district of his state, where he replaced Charles N. Brumm on March 4, 1889 . After two re-elections, he was able to spend three more legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1895. From 1891 he was chairman of the Committee on Pacific Railroads . In 1894 he was not re-elected.

Between 1896 and 1900, Reilly was US Marshal for the eastern part of the state of Pennsylvania. After that he worked again as a lawyer. In 1913 he sought the position of judge on the Superior Court without success . He died in Pottsville on May 14, 1924.
