Charles N. Brumm (1896)

Charles Napoleon Brumm (born June 9, 1838 in Pottsville , Schuylkill County , Pennsylvania , †  January 11, 1917 in Minersville , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1909 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives three times .

Career

Charles Brumm attended his home public schools and Pennsylvania College in Gettysburg . Then he began to study law, which he did not finish because of the civil war . During the war he served in various functions in the army of the Union , in which he made it up to first lieutenant. He remained in the military until 1871 after the end of the war. That year he finished his law degree. After his admission to the bar he began to work in this profession in Pottsville. Politically, he first became a member of the Greenback Party , and in the mid-1880s he joined the Republicans . In 1878 he ran unsuccessfully for the US House of Representatives. In June 1884, he took part as a delegate at the Republican National Convention in Chicago , where James G. Blaine was nominated as a candidate for president.

In the congressional elections of 1880 Brumm was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 13th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Democrat John Walker Ryon on March 4, 1881 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1889 . In 1888 he was defeated by the Democrat James Bernard Reilly . In 1894 Brumm was re-elected to Congress in the 13th District of his state, where he replaced Reilly on March 4, 1895. By March 3, 1899, he was able to spend two more terms in the US House of Representatives, during which he was chairman of the Committee on Claims . The Spanish-American War of 1898 also fell during this period .

In 1898 Charles Brumm was no longer nominated for re-election by his party. After the death of the MP George Robert Patterson , he was elected as his successor to Congress at the by-election for the twelfth seat of his state, where he took up his new mandate on November 6, 1906. After being re-elected, he could remain there until his resignation on January 4, 1909. From 1907 he was chairman of the Committee on Mileage .

Charles Brumm's resignation came after his appointment as Appellate Judge in Schuylkill County. He held this post until his death on January 11, 1917 in Minersville. His son George (1880-1934) was also a member of Congress.
